The Ins and Outs of an Education Term Paper

August 22nd, 2008

Going into the educational field is a noble decision; we need good educators, which is part of the reason why you need to take extra pains any time you are writing an education term paper.  How well you will do in your field depends quite a lot on the quality of the term papers you write.  This is particularly true when your topic is specifically rooted in your chosen field of study.

Every education major is different.  Every educator is different.  Naturally, then, every education term paper is different is well.  Big surprise, right?  Honestly, though, every education student and actual educator has a different teaching philosophy, a different teaching style, different goals, et cetera.  However, there are certain similarities, certain rules which much be followed, and that is how it is with educational papers.

Your tutor is extremely important to the entire term paper writing process.  His or her presence is invaluable.  Depending on your university, it may not be referred to as a “tutor.”  You may have an adviser.  You may have a mentor.  Whatever the case and whatever the term, he or she needs to be with you every step of the way – tutors know that, of course, and will be more than happy to offer every bit of assistance they possibly can.

Your tutor – or adviser – will, for instance, help you go through possible term paper ideas for your education term paper.  Because writing your term paper is designed to be a learning process, choosing a topic is very important.  Do you want to discuss something in which you are interested but about which you know little?  Or would you prefer to write your paper on a subject connected to the particular field or genre you hope to teach?  For instance, if you are interested in teaching grade school children, you could choose term paper ideas revolving around possible learning tools and visual aids for children in the age group you want to teach – children ages six to eight, for example.

Your tutor, adviser, mentor, what have you, is can also help you sketch out the correct term paper format.  Educational papers can often be very intensive and in depth.  This in turn can lead to them running quite long.  There is nothing wrong with that whatsoever, but following the right format in terms of pertinent sections can make the whole process a lot easier.  Of course, he or she will help you as far as technical format goes as well – that is, when it comes to citing sources in the appropriate style.

Lastly, as with all term papers but especially with an education term paper, proofreading is incredibly vital.  Your tutor can also help a lot when it comes to term paper editing.  More than that, he or she can help keep you on track, so you do not leave your term paper writing to the last minute.  As well, he or she can help you prepare your defense, when you come up against the department.

Using High School Research Paper Topics to Help with Term Papers

August 16th, 2008

It is never too early to start preparing for college, and that is where high school research paper topics really become helpful. Research papers in high school probably seem like a tedious drag to you right now, but trust, your high school teachers are giving you these assignments for a reason.

You are going to do a lot of researching during your scholastic career – a lot. Term papers, essays, dissertations – you will have to research to get the material for all of them. High school research paper topics do prepare you for that. You learn how to seek out a good source, how to take excellent notes, and how to form an excellent thesis. These are all key components in term paper writing.

Writing a good term paper is dependent on all of these skills – and they have to be perfect. Can you imagine sitting in your very first college English class, being told that your biggest assignment of the semester will be a comprehensive term paper, and drawing a complete blank because you never took your high school research paper topics seriously? That is rather akin to those nightmares where you do not study for a test or somehow manage to skip a class all semester without even realizing it.

Your ultimate skills in term paper editing stem from research papers written in high school as well. You see, that is the last time when your teacher will actually be able to sit down and show you step by step all the revisions you need to do – and, more importantly, why you need to do them. It will be the last time you are pretty much guaranteed the opportunity to fix those mistakes and turn in the paper again.

Writing research papers in high school will also later help you come up with your own term paper ideas. You will learn how to cultivate your own topics and craft a strong thesis statement around those topics. You may wonder how, especially if your teacher is in the habit of supplying you with ideas. Trust, this will change. Even as the school year goes on, your teachers will start broadening the topics they give you, until you are left to devise your own within the scope of that particular class. That is generally what you will have to do in terms of term paper ideas. Your professors may offer you broad topics as a possibility. It will be up to you to hone them down and tweak them into something about which you will be interested to write.

Rather than a burden, you should view high school research paper topics as an opportunity. It may seem like your teachers are punishing you, or like they want to make class boring, but in truth they are trying to prepare you for all the term paper writing you will be doing in college. They are prepping you so that you will know all the key elements necessary to craft a good term paper. And trust, by the end of that first semester of college, you will be very glad they did.

3 Possible Essay Prompts

August 15th, 2008

Essay prompts are a great way to prepare yourself for more intensive writing, be it term papers, research papers, dissertations, or theses.  Looking up prompts and writing about them on your own is a sure way to hone your writing skills.  That way, by the time you reach college and beyond, you will already be quite skilled at something you will be doing a lot of – writing and researching.

Your term papers, in particular, will benefit from all the essay prompts with which you practice.  Furthermore, doing them on your own will help you tremendously on those occasions when your teacher or professor drops one in your lap with no notice whatsoever!  Term paper writing in general can be greatly helped when you get used to writing something informative, descriptive, and well structured in a very quick period of time.

So, with that being said, let us discuss a few examples of good essay prompts.  You can find these anywhere on the Internet.  The ones used for this essay were found on a page associated with a well known and quite prestigious university in the United States.  Pages like those can help you with term paper writing in general, as most of them offer step by step instructions.  More importantly, to this end, prompts can help recognize the components which go into a really fantastic, descriptive term paper.

Example 1: As society evolves, so do the ways we raise our children – and the way we think children should be raised in general.  Craft an comparison essay revolving around the way you think children should be raised and the techniques your parents used to raise you.  If you like, put it in letter form; pretend you are writing into a parenting magazine, a pediatric journal, or to a teenager you know.

Example 2: Parents who work generally recognize the link which exists between the state of the economy and the lives of individual families.  Meaning, they are accustomed to needing babysitters, nannies, et cetera, to watch their children during working hours.  Some parents and experts thinks this negative affects children, some do not.  How do you feel about this?  Did you experience it as a child?  Discuss how it affected you.

Example 3: It is well known that colleges consider extracurricular activities as well as grades when considering an applicant.  Do you agree with this or disagree?  Should extracurricular activities be considered more important than academic achievements?  What should the ratio be between them?  Which is more important in terms of preparing for the future?

These are just a few sample essay prompts, but they offer an idea of what you can be writing about to prepare yourself for future term papers and writing intensive assignments.  Prompts can ultimately also help you when it comes to term paper format and term paper editing.  You get familiar with the whole writing process, which can really prepare you for college classes that rely heavily on written assignments and lengthy papers.

Term Paper Editing Techniques

August 12th, 2008

Term paper editing is an essential but often overlooked part of writing.  It is terribly easy to scan through a rough draft while it is still on the computer screen, fix a few glaring errors here and there, and then call it good.  Show of hands – how many of you have done this?  Your faithful author is guilty of it too – as well as finally reading the hard copy of the “final draft” in class, the day it is due, only to find tons of little mess ups that could ultimately pull down the paper’s final grade.

Read carefully: do not do this ever again.  In order to be graded highly, term papers need to be as close to flawless as you can possibly get them.  It is very difficult to accurately proofread and edit a paper while you are still looking at it on your computer screen – and this is a scientific fact.  The computer screen jumps, this can mess with your eyes, and you can miss a lot of points.  You may be able to get around this by sending it to a few people to proofread for you, but make sure that, if you simply do not want to print out your paper for term paper editing purposes, then send it to at least three people who are willing to read over it.

Without a doubt, the best way to edit your term papers is to print them out first.  You will be able to incorporate and comprehend the information therein much more clearly.  It is also a good idea to edit your paper several times – with breaks in between each session.  When you have finished your paper and printed it out, walk away from it before editing it for the first time.  Do the same each time you come back to proofread it.  A winning technique is to place a black sheet of paper, a ruler, et cetera – some kind of straight edge, in other words, preferably but not necessarily something that covers up the entire page – and use it to help you reach your paper line by line.  This will keep your eyes from jumping all around the page, which could cause you to miss the kind of glaring error that should never be seen in a good term paper.  While it may seem time consuming, this type of term paper editing can save you from those small mistakes that you end up kicking yourself for later.

As far as term paper format goes, you should use references for editing.  For example, if your paper is written in MLA style, then compare your format to the term paper examples found in an MLA reference book.  The same goes for APA style, Chicago style, or whatever style your professor assigned.

Term paper editing can be tedious, but you must understand how invaluable it is.  While writing draft after draft may seem like an unnecessary part of the term paper writing process, it is really an integral part.  Your rough draft is just that – rough.  If you want the final paper you turn in to be rough as well, then by all means, do not edit your paper in a detailed and extensive manner.  However if you want to present a winning paper which reads as though it was written by someone who cares about the work they are doing, then follow these simple techniques and edit your paper properly.

Building a Biography Term Paper

August 3rd, 2008

Writing a biography term paper is a serious endeavor, because you are writing about a person.  You are discussing facts which can be factually disputed, which means that you need to be extremely careful about what you are actually writing.  Your analysis of your subject is certainly important but you have to realize that it only goes so far.

At the end of the day, you decide what goes into your biography term paper.  If, for instance, you want to write your paper on Allen Ginsberg, the controversial, witty, passionate, and praised author of such works as Howl, A Supermarket in California, and Plutonian Ode, you choose the information you consider relevant for your paper.  That is well and good, but it is also a huge responsibility, and you need to take it seriously.  Do not, for instance, start skewing easily proven or disputed facts for your own purposes, just to create a descriptive term paper.

To write a good term paper, you have to stay true to form.  That is true whether it is an opinion paper or a biographical paper.  You cannot include just the “interesting” facts.  To continue using Allen Ginsberg as an example, then, you have to include information like his birth date, where he was born, who his parents were and what they did, et cetera.  You cannot simply talk about his wild, controversial reputation, his passionate personality, or the occurrences of his sexuality in his poetry.

Term paper editing is extremely important in biographical term papers.  You have to make sure that all your facts are accurate, in addition to make sure that your term paper format is flawless.  You need to proofread several times, go back and check your facts – then double check them, triple check them, et cetera.

Now, all of that being said, of course you get to include all of the interesting information in your biography term paper.  You can discuss Allen Ginsberg’s anger and passion in Howl, for instance, and include events in his life that may have made him feel that way.  You can discuss the sexual imagery, language, and acts seen in so many of his poems, and then bring it around to his personal and private life, incorporating elements of his personality and his personal affairs which may have played a part in his choice of subject matter.

In truth, writing a biography term paper is not that much different than writing any other term papers.  In the majority of academic papers, of course, you have to present a certain amount of factual information.  You have to rely on this which are already known and you cannot simply bandy your own opinions about if you have no proof or references to back them up well enough.  With biographical term papers, honesty is crucial; present the facts first, and then your opinion and analysis of them.  By doing so, you will have no trouble creating a descriptive term paper which is both well thought out and interesting.

Tips for Term Paper Writing

July 23rd, 2008

Term paper writing does not have to be as hard as a lot of students make it out to be as long as you follow good writing methods. Without a doubt, when you write a term paper, you have a wonderful opportunity for learning more about your subject, which is always beneficial. By looking at term papers as an opportunity rather than an obstacle, the process can be fun as well as easy.

To some extent, a good term paper is based on your opinion. However, when considering the ratio of opinions to factual evidence, the latter needs to outweigh the former, because if you show bias in your paper, it is going to fall apart, at least to your readers. You cannot underestimate the amount of information you need or the amount of research you need to do when crafting an excellent college term paper.

The term paper format is dependent on good, solid information. Thus, there are a few things that you can do when you are researching your subject that will help you significantly when you get to the writing process. Taking notes is, of course, practically a necessity. However you can do this in a number of ways. Most teachers in high school and quite a few college professors encourage students to use note cards when they are looking for information. These certainly make citing your information easier and, when done the right way, can actually ensure that your paper is practically already written when you get to that point.

Some students find this a tedious method, however. In that case, you can simply go through the books, pamphlets, essays, et cetera, that you are using as source references and material, and simply mark the important passages with a pencil. However you need to be as clear as you possibly can, because a series of complex, convoluted, and confusing pencil marks are not going to help you in your term paper writing. They will not help with term paper editing either, because it will be too difficult to pinpoint specific information.

A number of students also find it helpful to simply summarize whatever they are reading – a chapter at a time, however. The one drawback this has on term paper writing is that it might cause too much bias in your paper, especially if your summary is not objective. If, however, your term paper is meant to be based on your own argument as much as it is the actual facts, then this technique can be extremely helpful.

It is extremely important to keep these methods in mind when considering term paper ideas. Term paper writing is a science, in a way. If you plan to write yours on a broad or far reaching topic, then some of these methods might be a bit too tedious for time constraints. Rushing through your term paper will make it sloppy and disorganized, it is not something that you can write up the night before it is due. Always keep the time you have in mind – and remember that good note taking will always help you more than it will hinder you.
