Research Paper Outline
The definition of a research paper may be attributed to the fact that you actually need to conduct researching. Sometimes a research paper may be identified with a name like a dissertation or a term paper. But no matter how it is called, a research paper outline will always be an integral part in the many steps of writing a good research paper.
High school term papers usually follow a definite outline for writing. The parts like Introduction, Body and Conclusion are always identified first. But for a beginner it is important to initially create a file that will serve as the outline or system for writing. This will somehow ensure that you are going to write a coherent paper full of necessary details in presenting a research study.
If you are not really familiar with constructing a template for a research paper outline, you can take a look at the following example:
Title
I. Topic One
A. Sub topic 1
B. Subtopic 2
C. Etc
II Topic Two
A. Subtopic 1
B. Subtopic 2
C. Etc
III Topic Three……..
Actually, the presented outline can be useful for each part in the body paragraph section. For a full research paper, you may have this chapter composition outline:
1. Introduction
2. Literature review
3. Methodology
4. Data
5. Analysis
6. Results
7. Conclusion
Now that you have some ideas on how to write a research paper outline, you can start working on your paper. My teacher is making us write a 10 page research paper on the alchemist and siddhartha and compare the two… i cant find an outline longer than 5 paragraphs long, being 10 pages i feel that it would require a different format.

Dear Jeff,
It’s not obligatory. Some topics may not have any subtopics, if they talk about something very specific, that can’t be devided.
But usually the topics are expanded into subtopics, to make the research paper outline more detailed.

I have a quick question. Are you supposed to use only one font size for the outline or use two or three, such as a 16 for title and 14 for topic and 12 for sub topic. You answer is appreciated.

actually you can use any font sizes. But if you want to highlight the major topics over the sub topics, you may increase the size of the former. In some case, you can simply have the same font sizes all throughout and make the major topics Bold.

the outline is just a plan of your future paper. You need to write the theme sentences – like a heading for each paragraph (or a couple of paragraphs, if your paper is big). Just think about what you will write first, what second and put it on the paper. After that you can classify which points are the most important (heading) and which can be a subheading.
